Alicante Central Market

The Central Market of Alicante occupies an early 20th-century eclectic-style building with Valencian Modernista ornamentation, on Avenida de Alfonso el Sabio. Its main façade opens onto a large flight of steps, and inside the space is organised into three basilica-style naves with stalls grouped in elongated blocks. The structure of rolled-steel pillars and trusses gives an open, airy feel, while the sloping, segmented roofs allow overhead lighting. Outside, the brickwork of the main façades, the tall vertical openings and ornamental elements such as the basket-handle arch of the entrance, the tiles and the Ionic scrolls stand out. The building still serves as a municipal market and underwent a renovation in 1986.
