Wusong River
The Wusong River, also called Suzhou Creek, runs through central Shanghai and flows into the Huangpu River at the northern end of the Bund. Along its banks, warehouses and factories from the industrial era have been preserved, today converted into an art district (M50) and protected as heritage. The riverside walk takes in historic European-style bridges, such as the Waibaidu (Garden Bridge), and shows the transformation of a waterway that once marked the boundary between foreign concessions and today hosts annual rowing competitions. Its history includes a past of severe pollution and a rehabilitation project begun in 1998 that has improved water quality and the urban environment.
