Customs House

The Customs House is an eight-storey building on the Bund, built in 1927 and still in use as a customs office. Its façade combines a Greek Neoclassical design, with granite on the eastern section and brown brick on the upper floors of the west wing, and the main entrance is flanked by four Doric columns. Inside, the main lobby has marble columns decorated with gold leaf and an octagonal dome with mosaics on its eight faces. The most striking feature is the 90-metre clock tower, with four faces 5.3 metres in diameter made up of more than 100 pieces of glass each and 72 automatic lamps. The clock mechanism and bells were made in England to the design of Big Ben and shipped to Shanghai in 1927; the five bells, the largest weighing 6 tonnes, were cast by John Taylor Bellfounders. The tower offers views over the whole Bund and the city centre. The building sits on a 5,722-square-metre plot and has a total floor area of 32,680 square metres.
