The Romea Theatre, located in the Plaza de Julián Romea in the historic centre of Murcia, is the city's main theatre and one of the most important in Spain. Opened in 1862, its current exterior dates from 1880 and the interior was rebuilt between 1899 and 1901. The facade, in an eclectic style with neoclassical features and Modernista details, displays three busts of Beethoven, Mozart and Liszt, and above the windows of the main floor there are four medallions with reliefs of Murcian playwrights. Inside, the ceiling of the stalls is decorated with works by Murcian painters depicting Julián Romea and allegorical figures of the Arts, and the curtain is by Emilio Sala. The auditorium is horseshoe-shaped, with stalls, boxes, three levels of balconies and upper galleries. Declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1990, the theatre offers a programme covering theatre, dance, musicals, concerts, flamenco and zarzuela, with series such as Teatro en Feria that bring leading figures of the performing arts.
