Casino de Murcia
Casino de Murcia is a historic building on the central Calle Trapería, near the cathedral. Its construction began in 1853 and it blends artistic styles from the 19th and 20th centuries. It was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1983 and is a Site of Cultural Interest. It is the seat of a private club founded in 1847, but its monumental ground floor is open to tourist visits. It is the most-visited civil building in the Region of Murcia, with around 150,000 visitors a year, 25,000 of them foreign. The visit takes in spaces such as the Arab Patio, with Neo-Nasrid decoration and more than 20,000 sheets of gold leaf; the 1913 library, with an upper gallery of carved wood and thousands of volumes; the Neo-Baroque ballroom of 1875, with ceilings decorated with allegories and bronze chandeliers with Baccarat crystal; the Neoclassical Pompeian patio, with Ionic columns and a sculpture of Venus; and other rooms such as the Congresillo, the ladies' powder room, the tea room and the billiard room. The building houses a collection of 19th-century Spanish painting. Visiting hours are Monday to Sunday, 10:30 to 19:00. The restaurant is open 11:00 to 24:00 Sunday to Thursday and until 3:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Smart dress is required, and the building is wheelchair accessible, though the terrace is not.
