Strasbourg Observatory
The Strasbourg Observatory is a historic astronomical complex in the Neustadt district, built from 1875. Its main instrument, a 50 cm Repsold refracting telescope brought into service in 1880, was the largest in the German Empire of its day. Today the observatory houses the Centre de données astronomiques de Strasbourg, which manages international astronomical databases such as SIMBAD, VizieR and Aladin. In the vaulted basement is the Crypte aux étoiles museum, which exhibits classic telescopes and old instruments such as clocks and theodolites. The site is surrounded by the Botanical Garden of the University of Strasbourg, so the visit can be combined with a stroll in the garden.
