Former Carthusian Monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas

The Former Carthusian Monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas is a monumental complex on the Isla de la Cartuja in Seville. Founded in 1400 by the Carthusian order, it was one of the four Carthusian monasteries in Andalusia and became, according to the traveller Hieronymus Münzer in 1494, the second-richest in Christendom. In 1964 it was declared a national monument. It now houses the Andalusian Centre for Contemporary Art (CAAC), the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage and the rectorate of the International University of Andalusia. Visitors can tour the church, the cloisters, the chapels of Santa Catalina, San Bruno, Santa Ana, Profundis and la Magdalena, the prior's cell, the sacristy, the refectory, the gardens and orchards. The kilns and chimney of the former Pickman ceramics factory, which operated from 1841 to 1984, are also preserved. The CAAC displays a permanent collection with works by artists such as Luis Gordillo, Candida Höfer, Rebecca Horn, Pablo Palazuelo, Joseph Kosuth and Louise Bourgeois, and organises temporary exhibitions, seminars, workshops and concerts. The monastery has historical ties to Christopher Columbus, whose remains were buried here in 1509, and it served as the Royal Pavilion at the 1992 Universal Exposition.
