Serpentine Galleries
The Serpentine Galleries, located in Kensington Gardens, comprise two spaces devoted to contemporary art: Serpentine South, in a former tea house by the lake, and Serpentine North, in a former gunpowder store with an extension designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. Their galleries have hosted exhibitions by acclaimed artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor and Marina Abramović, and they also feature a permanent work dedicated to Diana, Princess of Wales, at the entrance to Serpentine South. Every summer, the gallery commissions a temporary pavilion from international architects who have not previously built in England, allowing visitors to explore innovative structures on the lawn of Serpentine South and take part in cultural activities such as screenings and talks. Serpentine North also has a restaurant, shop and social spaces integrated into the historic building and its modern extension.
