Mosque beside Al-Hussein Square, in the heart of Islamic Cairo, rebuilt in the 19th century on an older shrine; the memory of Husayn, grandson of the Prophet, is venerated here. Opposite it begins the souk of Khan el-Khalili, founded in the 14th century, with alleys of metalwork, jewellery, spices and souvenirs, and traditional cafés where tea or shisha is served. Non-Muslims are not usually able to enter the mosque.
