Main axis of Fatimid Cairo, named after the caliph al-Muizz, who had the city founded in 969. It runs from the gate of Bab al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuwayla in the south and holds one of the largest collections of medieval Islamic architecture on a single street: mosques, madrasas, sabils and mausoleums from the Fatimid, Ayyubid and Mamluk periods, such as the complex of Sultan Qalawun. It is almost an open-air museum.
