Mosque founded in 970-972 by the Fatimids shortly after the creation of Cairo, under the rule of General Jawhar al-Siqilli. Over the centuries it became one of the oldest universities in the world still active and a reference point for Sunni Islam. Its complex combines the original prayer hall with additions from the Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman periods, including several minarets and a wide courtyard.
