16th-century fortress whose name means "Old Fort", on a site that tradition associates with ancient Indraprastha. It was begun by Humayun with his city of Din-Panah and completed by the Afghan Sher Shah Suri. It preserves three great gates, the Qila-i-Kuhna mosque (1541) and the Sher Mandal, an octagonal pavilion of red sandstone. It stands opposite Delhi Zoo, near Humayun's Tomb.
