Omonia Square
Omonia Square is one of the oldest squares in Athens, built in 1846 at the junction of several major streets, including Panepistimiou, Stadiou, Athinas, Peiraios, Agiou Konstadinou and 3rd Septemvriou. It is home to the old neoclassical hotels Bagkeion and Megas Alexandros, on either side of Athinas Street. The square houses the Pentakiklon ('five rings') sculpture, installed in 2001, which becomes a kinetic sculpture when water flows through it, and the historic fountain from 1958, restored in 2020. It is a major transport hub, served by Omonoia metro station, and a multicultural meeting point. It has been the setting for sporting celebrations such as Greece's victories at EuroBasket 2005 and the 2004 European Football Championship.
