Place des Vosges

The Place des Vosges, in the Marais district, is a perfect square surrounded by brick and stone buildings, with 36 pavilions connected by arcaded walkways that today house shops. At the centre of the square stands an equestrian statue of Louis XIII and gardens with fountains and lime trees, where visitors can stroll or rest in the green areas. Access to the square is through triple arcades in the King's and Queen's pavilions, which stand out above the unified roofline, although they were never actually inhabited by royalty. Among the buildings surrounding the square are the former residences of historical figures such as Victor Hugo, Madame de Sévigné and Cardinal Richelieu.
