Valencia Museum of Fine Arts
The museum occupies the former Colegio de San Pío V, a building designed by Juan Pérez Castiel in 1683 and finished in the 18th century, on Calle San Pío V, next to the Turia Gardens. It became independent of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in 1913 and is one of Spain's great painting museums. Its galleries hold Valencian primitives of the 14th and 15th centuries, Gothic altarpieces, and Renaissance and Baroque painting with names such as Juan de Juanes, Ribera, Goya and Velázquez, of whom a self-portrait is kept, as well as a gallery devoted to Joaquín Sorolla and 19th-century Spanish painting. The building preserves the Renaissance-style Patio del Embajador Vich, and archaeological pieces are displayed in the cloister. Allow between two and two and a half hours to see it at a relaxed pace. Entry is free, so you can come back to see just one part.
