Serranos Towers
The Serranos Towers are one of the two medieval gates that survive from Valencia's city wall. They were built between 1392 and 1398 to a design by Pere Balaguer, who first studied other fortified gates in the territories of the Crown of Aragon. They are two polygonal towers joined by a central block with a semicircular arch, in ashlar limestone over rubble masonry, in Valencian Gothic style. They served as a ceremonial entrance for kings and distinguished visitors, and from 1586 as a prison for nobles. During the Civil War they safeguarded works evacuated from the Prado Museum. Between 1893 and 1914 they were restored by the Real Academia de San Carlos, under the direction of the sculptor José Aixá. Inside there are Gothic halls with pointed arches and rib vaults, and from the terraces you can see the city and the Turia Gardens. They stand in Plaza de los Fueros, and every February they host the Crida de las Fallas.
