Île de la Cité
The Île de la Cité lies in the middle of the River Seine, at the heart of Paris, and is considered the ancient centre of the city, covering an area of approximately 22.5 hectares. Visitors can explore medieval monuments such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie, as well as discover the Pont Neuf, the Hôtel-Dieu hospital and the Memorial to the Martyrs of the Deportation. The island is also home to the Police Prefecture, the Palace of Justice and the Commercial Court, as well as landmark squares such as Vert-Galant, Jean XXIII and Dauphine, and the city's flower market. Beneath the square in front of Notre-Dame, the archaeological crypt allows visitors to see remains of the ancient Roman quay and traces of the island's ancient history.
