The Conciergerie
The Conciergerie is a former royal palace and prison at the western tip of the Île de la Cité, beneath the Palais de Justice. Visitors walk through two large medieval halls that survive from the palace, the Salle des Gens d'Armes and the Salle des Gardes, as well as the royal kitchens. The visit includes a reconstruction of the revolutionary-era prison cells, the pailleux cells, Marie Antoinette's cell and the expiatory chapel, along with evidence of the 1910 flood. During the Revolution, 2,781 prisoners passed through here before being executed, including Marie Antoinette, Robespierre, Lavoisier and the twenty-one Girondins. The monument is run by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux and offers a Histopad for the visit.
