A monumental gate of the Imperial City, built in 1420 in the Ming era and rebuilt in 1651 after a fire. From its balcony Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China on 1 October 1949, and its façade bears a large portrait of him. It leads into the Forbidden City and you can climb the tower with a ticket. It is at the northern end of the square of the same name.
