Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves House-Museum
This is an artist's house built in 1904-1905 on Avenida 5 de Outubro, in Lisbon. It was commissioned by the painter José Malhoa and designed by the architect Norte Júnior; it was conceived as a home and studio, which is why it is sometimes called Casa Malhoa. In 1932 it was bought by the doctor and collector António Anastácio Gonçalves, who gathered some 3,000 pieces there and bequeathed it to the State. The museum opened in 1980 and, after being extended with an adjoining building (also by Norte Júnior), reopened in its current form in December 1997. Inside you can see 19th- and 20th-century Portuguese painting, with names such as Columbano, Carlos Reis, Silva Porto or Amadeo, as well as Chinese porcelain, furniture, silverware, sculpture, textiles, clocks and glass. It also keeps documents and objects from the Silva Porto bequest. The dining room shows how rooms were decorated at the time.
