New National Theatre
The New National Theatre, Tokyo is Japan's first national performing arts centre, dedicated to opera, ballet, contemporary dance and theatre, located in Shinjuku and connected to the Tokyo Opera City complex. The building was completed in February 1997 and its first public performances were held in October that year. It houses three main halls: the Opera House, with 1,814 seats and a permanent orchestra pit for up to 120 musicians, used mainly for opera and ballet; the Playhouse, with 1,038 seats in proscenium format and 1,010 in open format, dedicated to theatre and contemporary dance; and The Pit, in the basement, seating 340 to 468 with a movable stage and seating for contemporary productions. Since 1997 more than 650 productions have been staged, with about 300 performances per season and roughly 200,000 spectators. The centre has resident opera and ballet companies, artist training programmes, a library and video library open to the public, backstage tours, and exhibitions related to the performing arts. Its architecture and modern facilities have been praised and ranked among the best in the world.
