Pinkas Synagogue
The Pinkas Synagogue, at Široká 3 in the Josefov quarter, dates from 1535 and is the second oldest surviving synagogue in Prague. It is late Gothic in style and was built by Aaron Meshullam Horowitz, originally as a private house of prayer. Today it is a Holocaust memorial. Between 1955 and 1960, under the direction of Hana Volavková, around 80,000 names of Jewish victims from Bohemia and Moravia were inscribed on its walls, making it one of the oldest memorials in Europe. On the upper floor is a collection of drawings by children from the Theresienstadt (Terezín) ghetto, made between 1942 and 1944. The atmosphere is one of quiet reflection: more than an ordinary synagogue, it works as a place of remembrance.
