Church of San Cosme y San Damián
A parish church on the left bank of the Arlanzón, in the southern district, already mentioned in documents of 1295. The present building comes from a major 16th-century reconstruction and has three aisles with pointed arches, a polygonal apse and rib and star vaults, mixing Gothic with Renaissance. Its most striking feature is the Plateresque north doorway, dated 1552 and attributed to Juan de Vallejo, with medallions of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist and statues of the patron saints, Cosmas and Damian. The sober, classicist tower is the work of Gabriel de Cotero and was built in 1621. Inside, the highlights are the gilded Baroque high altarpiece (1663-1675) by Policarpo de la Nestosa, a late 16th-century Renaissance altarpiece in one of the aisles, the Renaissance choir stalls from the abbey of San Quirce, and the tomb of Cristóbal de Andino and Catalina de Frías. The Christ of Health, carved in the late 15th century, and the Cristo Chamarilero, which is carried in procession during Holy Week, are venerated here.
