Church of Santa Águeda (Santa Gadea)
The church of Santa Águeda, popularly known as Santa Gadea, stands on the street of the same name, very close to Burgos Cathedral. Tradition places here, around the end of 1072, the famous Oath in which the Cid made Alfonso VI swear that he had taken no part in the death of his brother Sancho II; the episode has no documentary backing and is considered legendary, although it spread through ballads from the 13th century. The present church is not the one of that time, but it occupies the same site, and a plaque on the outer wall commemorates it. It is a small, elongated church with a single nave, Gothic vaults from the 14th century, an apse from the 15th century and a choir arch from the 17th. The neoclassical Escalada chapel, with the coat of arms of its sponsor, and the neo-Gothic alabaster altarpiece by Fortunato Sotillo stand out. A Baroque painting of the Coronation of the Virgin is also preserved.
