Arch of Santa María
A gate in the old wall of Burgos, built in the 14th century as an entrance and defensive tower. In the 16th century Juan de Vallejo and Francisco de Colonia rebuilt it as a triumphal arch showing Emperor Charles V surrounded by figures from the history of the city and of Castile. It stands beside the Arlanzón, opposite the cathedral. Inside, the Sala de Poridad preserves motifs related to El Cid and a Mudéjar coffered ceiling, and was the seat of the Burgos Council until the 18th century. The Main Hall shows a painting by Vela Zanetti, remains of Mudéjar plasterwork and the pharmacy of the former Hospital of San Juan. Today it is a municipal exhibition hall and entry is free.
