Church of San Gil Abad
A Gothic church built at the end of the 14th century next to the San Gil gate, on the eastern slope of Castle Hill; its exterior is austere because the building was incorporated into the city wall. Inside it has three naves with a transept, a dome on pendentives and rib vaults, and its richness lies in the chapels, paid for by merchant families of the city. The Chapel of the Nativity, commissioned in 1529 by Juan de Castro and Inés de Lerma, holds a Plateresque altarpiece with twelve scenes and tombs attributed to Juan de Vallejo. The Buena Mañana Chapel has a star-shaped rib vault and an altarpiece from the late 15th century attributed to Gil de Siloé, as does the Chapel of the Three Kings, from 1489. The Chapel of the Christ of the Holy Drops, built by Juan de Vallejo in 1563, has housed the Christ of Burgos since 1836. It has been a Bien de Interés Cultural since 1931 and is part of the Merchants' Route along with San Nicolás and San Esteban, with a joint ticket.
