Captaincy General Palace
An ashlar palace built on Plaza de Alonso Martínez when Burgos was the capital of a military region. In 1903 the town council approved the demolition of the Casa de las Cuatro Torres, which occupied the site, and the building was finished on 10 August 1907, to a design by Saturnino Martínez Ruiz. In 1927 it passed to the Ministry of Defence through an exchange of land. It has two floors in the central block and four in the side wings. Today it is the seat of the Military Command of Burgos, Soria and Cantabria, and part of the ground floor is occupied by the Military History Museum, with flags, weapons, uniforms and dioramas, entered from Calle Concordia. Inside, the highlights are the entrance hall with a carved timber ceiling and stained glass with provincial coats of arms, and the Throne Room. The military offices are not open to the public; the museum is.
