San Jorge Castle in Seville
Beneath the Triana Market lie the underground ruins of the San Jorge Castle, a medieval fortification that was the seat and prison of the Spanish Inquisition. Visitors walk through a museum and interpretation centre dedicated to the history of the castle, the Inquisition and religious repression, created after the archaeological excavations carried out on the site. In the immediate surroundings, the Callejón de la Inquisición, which was part of the fortification, now connects Calle Castilla with the Paseo Nuestra Señora de la O. The site has also been included in tourist routes on Seville's operatic heritage, with a commemorative plaque linked to Beethoven's opera Fidelio.
