The National Museum of Natural History of France is a public research and outreach institution, with its main site at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. Visitors can explore several specialised galleries: the Grande Galerie de l'Évolution, opened in 1889 and renovated in 1994, which displays taxidermied animal collections and a life-size parade of African mammals in its central nave; the Gallery of Mineralogy and Geology, with more than 600,000 stones and fossils, including giant crystals of azurite, tourmaline and malachite, and meteorites such as a 360 kg fragment of the Canyon Diablo meteorite; the Gallery of Botany, home to the Herbier National with 7.5 million plant specimens; and the Gallery of Palaeontology and Comparative Anatomy, known for its large skeletons of fossil vertebrates, though temporarily closed for renovation. The site also includes the Jardin des Plantes, with historic greenhouses and the Ménagerie, the world's second-oldest zoo. The museum has 14 sites across France, but its visitable core in Paris is the Jardin des Plantes.
