Nijō Castle
Residence of the Tokugawa shogun in Kyoto, commissioned by Tokugawa Ieyasu and completed in 1603. The Ninomaru Palace preserves rooms with sliding doors painted by the Kanō school and coffered ceilings. Its wooden corridors have so-called nightingale floors, which squeak when stepped on to warn of intruders. The complex, surrounded by moats and stone walls, is a World Heritage Site. It is located right in the centre of Kyoto.
