Kōkyo

The Tokyo Imperial Palace (Kōkyo) is the residence of the Emperor of Japan and stands on the site of the former Edo Castle. Much of the grounds are closed to the public, but visitors can access the East Gardens, a public park preserving remains of the castle, such as the foundations of the keep, and home to the Tōkagakudō Concert Hall, the Suwa no Chaya teahouse and the Sannomaru Shozokan Museum of the Imperial Collections. In addition, the Imperial Household Agency runs free guided tours (morning and afternoon, Tuesday to Saturday) covering about 2.2 km inside the grounds, including the Kyūden courtyard and views of buildings such as Fujimi-yagura. On two days a year, 2 January and the Emperor's birthday, the public can enter through the Nakamon gate and see the imperial family on the balcony. Access to the tours requires advance booking or same-day tickets at the Kikyō-mon gate.
