Şehitlik Mosque
The Şehitlik Mosque is at Columbiadamm 128 in Neukölln, next to the Türkischer Friedhof, the oldest Muslim cemetery in Germany. The cemetery dates from 1866, when William I granted a plot of land to the Turkish community. After the First World War, when the Ottoman Empire fought alongside Germany, Turkish soldiers were buried there; hence the name Şehitlik, “martyrs”. The mosque was built between 1999 and 2005 on the commission of DITIB, to plans by the architect Hilmi Şenalp, in the Ottoman Renaissance style. It has a central dome, two white minarets of about 37 metres and room for around 1,500 people. Inside, ceramic tiles and marble in cobalt blue and white dominate, with golden calligraphy on a green background. In the cemetery there is an obelisk commemorating Ali Aziz Efendi, the first permanent Ottoman ambassador to Prussia, and other diplomats.
