Palais Garnier

The Palais Garnier, also known as the Opéra Garnier, is a monumental nineteenth-century building in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. Designed by Charles Garnier in the Napoleon III style, it opened in 1875 and has been a historic monument of France since 1923. Its main façade, 32 metres high, is decorated with multicoloured marble friezes, columns and statues representing deities from Greek mythology, as well as bronze busts of composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. Inside, visitors can walk up the grand ceremonial staircase of white marble with a red and green marble balustrade, leading to the Grand Foyer. The auditorium, in a traditional Italian horseshoe shape, seats 1,979 spectators and holds a chandelier weighing more than six tonnes; the surrounding ceiling was painted by Marc Chagall in 1964. The building also houses the Bibliothèque-Musée de l'Opéra de Paris, which holds nearly 600,000 documents, and offers guided tours and ballet and opera performances.
