Church of the Holy Trinity, Paris

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a nineteenth-century Catholic church in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, built between 1861 and 1867 by architect Théodore Ballu in the neo-Renaissance style of the Second Empire. It is notable for its 65-metre bell tower, its richly decorated façade with statues of the cardinal virtues and Doctors of the Church, and its 93-metre-long interior with an iron structure that allows for spacious volumes. Inside, the raised choir houses a high altar surrounded by ten columns representing the Ten Commandments, and the nave is flanked by chapels decorated with paintings and sculptures by Parisian artists. The church has a principal Cavaillé-Coll organ from 1869, with 3 keyboards and 60 stops, and a notable collection of nineteenth-century stained glass, especially in the Chapel of the Virgin. Its ties to music are remarkable: the funerals of Rossini, Berlioz and Bizet were held here, and Olivier Messiaen was titular organist for 61 years. Its façade inspired churches in Quebec and Sacramento.
