A large Gothic Franciscan church, begun around 1294 and attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio. It is known as the pantheon of Florence because it holds the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli, and the monument to Dante. It preserves frescoes by Giotto in the Bardi and Peruzzi chapels. It faces Piazza Santa Croce, with a 19th-century Neo-Gothic façade.
