Holy Spirit Monastery
The Orthodox Holy Spirit Monastery was founded in 1609 by the Orthodox Brotherhood of the Holy Trinity, which opposed the Union of Brest and had its own printing press. It has operated without interruption ever since and, since 1845, has been the residence of the bishops of Vilnius and Lithuania. It is on Aušros Vartų street, next to the Gate of Dawn. The church, Baroque in origin and today closer to classicism, has a symmetrical façade with two domed towers and rows of Doric pilasters. Its plan is a Latin cross and the interior retains the Baroque character of the 1750s reconstruction, with an iconostasis and frescoes, as well as twenty icons by Ivan Trutnev. In the centre of the nave, in a richly decorated casket, the remains of the holy martyrs Anthony, John and Eustathius of Vilnius are venerated, moved here in 1655. In 1852 a basement chapel dedicated to them was added. The monastery buildings are grouped around a courtyard behind an ornate gate.
