Shingon Buddhist temple founded in 794, when the capital moved to Heian-kyō, and entrusted in 823 to the monk Kūkai. Its five-storey pagoda, about 55 metres tall, is the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan; the current one dates from 1644. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lecture hall preserves a group of Buddhist sculptures that forms a three-dimensional mandala. On the 21st of every month the Kōbō-san flea market is held.
