Johannes Hevelius, Jan Heweliusz in Polish, was an astronomer and brewer from Gdansk, born in 1611 and died in 1687. He observed the sky from the rooftops of his houses and in 1647 published the Selenographia, an atlas of the Moon with detailed maps. The statue that commemorates him stands in the city's historic centre and honours one of its most famous residents.
