Non-Catholic Cemetery, Rome
The Non-Catholic Cemetery is in the Testaccio district, on Via Caio Cestio, next to the Pyramid of Cestius and close to Porta San Paolo. It came about because the Catholic Church did not allow non-Catholics to be buried in consecrated ground; the oldest known grave is that of a Protestant doctor from Edinburgh in 1716. Today it is run by foreign diplomatic representatives. Among its tombs are those of the poet John Keats, who died of tuberculosis aged 25, and of Percy Bysshe Shelley, who drowned in 1822 and whose heart was buried here in 1889. The philosopher Antonio Gramsci and former president Giorgio Napolitano also rest here. The sculptor William Wetmore Story created the Angel of Grief over the tomb of his wife Emelyn, and Goethe's son, August, has a medallion by Thorvaldsen. The grounds are a garden with cypresses, pomegranate trees and meadows, from which the Pyramid can be seen.
