Christ of the Lanterns (Plaza de Capuchinos)
The Cristo de los Faroles is a stone crucifix in Plaza de Capuchinos, a cobbled, whitewashed open space between the Capuchin convent and the Church of Los Dolores. It dates from 1794, is attributed to the sculptor Juan Navarro León and is linked to Friar Diego José de Cádiz, of the Capuchin order. Its original name was Cristo de los Desagravios y Misericordia, although popular usage renamed it after the lanterns that surround it, eight in all, mounted on iron brackets. The figure is enclosed by a small railing. You reach the square by climbing the Cuesta del Bailío, and at night it is lit only by the lanterns. The figure, in white marble, rises on a stone pedestal in the centre and is one of the best-loved in the city.
