Archaeological Promenade (Walls of Tarragona)

CultureVisit: ~60 minFrom €5Opening hours: Vigente en octubre (hasta el 26 de octubre): martes a sábado 9:00-20:45, domingo

The promenade runs between the Roman wall of Tarraco and the 18th-century fortifications built during the War of the Spanish Succession. In the 1930s it was turned into the landscaped promenade it is today, open to the public. The wall is the oldest surviving monument in the city: its first phase probably dates from between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, with three towers and stretches of large blocks, and most of what can be seen belongs to a later phase, between 150 and 125 BC. Three towers survive. The Archbishop's Tower has a Roman base and a 14th-century raised upper section, the Cabiscol Tower keeps an appearance close to the original, and the Minerva Tower, also known as the Sant Magí Tower, bears on its plinth a series of sculpted heads and a relief of the goddess. It is part of the Roman heritage managed by the Museu d'Història de Tarragona.
