Cathedral of Santa Tecla

CultureVisit: ~60 minFrom €5

The Cathedral of Santa Tecla rises at the highest point of Tarragona, over the ancient remains of a Roman temple, a Visigothic cathedral and an Arab mosque, showing architecture that moves between Romanesque and Gothic, with a basilica plan of three naves, a transept and three semicircular apses. Inside, visitors will find a series of chapels decorated with medieval, Renaissance and Baroque works, a main altarpiece with Gothic sculptures in polychrome alabaster, and a Romanesque stone-and-marble floor in geometric patterns. The cloister, rectangular in plan, with galleries whose capitals are carved with biblical scenes, surrounds a central courtyard and connects to historic spaces such as the sacristy and the refectory, while the adjoining Diocesan Museum displays pieces illustrating the evolution of Catalan sacred art. The main façade features a large rose window eleven metres in diameter and a Gothic portal decorated with sculptures of saints, prophets and scenes from Genesis, while the wrought-iron doors date from the 15th century.
