Amphitheatre of Tarraco
The Amphitheatre of Tarraco is a Roman structure by the sea, at the foot of the wall of the ancient city of Tarraco, where visitors can walk around the elliptical tiers and see the remains of the underground structures used to raise wild animals and gladiators to the arena by hoist. This was where gladiator fights, animal combats and public executions took place, and fragments of inscriptions and remains of a chapel dedicated to Nemesis, protector of the gladiators, are still preserved. After losing its original function, the amphitheatre was reused to build a Christian basilica and, later, a Romanesque church, whose remains can also be seen on the site.
