Convent Museum of the Descalzas of Antequera
A museum housed in the monastery of San José of the Discalced Carmelites, in the plaza de las Descalzas in Antequera, opened on 16 October 1999 with the artistic treasure the community had kept. The church is Baroque and its main altarpiece is attributed to Francisco Primo, with a 17th-century sculpture of Saint Joseph. The Tribuna room holds a bust of the Sorrowing Virgin by Pedro de Mena, a Saint Michael the Archangel by Giuseppe Sarno and several images of the Child Jesus. The Nicola Fumo room houses an Immaculate Conception and a Saint Joseph that the Neapolitan sculptor made in 1705. In the Saint Teresa room there is a painting by Luca Giordano, Saint Teresa the Writer, and the Nativity room holds the Descalzas Nativity scene, with a Mystery by the Quito artist Manuel Caspicara set against a scenography of the Antequera acropolis dominated by the Alcazaba.
