Lazarillo de Tormes Monument
This is a bronze group by the Salamanca sculptor Agustín Casillas, unveiled during the September fairs of 1974, which depicts Lazarillo and the blind man from the famous passage of the anonymous 16th-century novel, set beside the Roman bridge and the stone bull. The idea arose from a conversation between Casillas and the poet and university professor Rafael Laínez Alcalá, who felt like a lazarillo guiding his students around the city. Casillas first made a clay piece, which the mayor Pablo Beltrán de Heredia saw at an exhibition and commissioned in bronze. It stands on the bank of the Tormes, next to the church of Santiago and a few steps from the Roman bridge. The chosen passage is the opening of the novel, when the blind man bangs the boy's head against the stone bull on the bridge and teaches him that «the blind man's boy must know a little more than the devil».
