Church of Santiago del Arrabal
Church founded in the mid-12th century, beside the River Tormes, at the foot of the Roman Bridge and on the route of the Vía de la Plata. It was the parish church of the Mozarabs and, together with the cathedral, kept the right of sanctuary until 1772. Its predominant style is Mudéjar, built in brick, although little of the medieval building remains: in the 1950s and 1960s Anselmo Arenillas restored it, removing the tower, rebuilding apses and walls and adding a dome and a stone bell gable. Inside are a baptismal font and a 13th-century carving of Santiago Matamoros, and in the central nave there is an icon of Christ Pantocrator painted by Kiko Argüello. Today it is a Catholic church in use.
