Palace of the Cité
The Palace of the Cité, on the Île de la Cité, was the residence and seat of power of the kings of France from the tenth to the fourteenth century, and has continued to be the seat of France's principal law courts to this day. Two essential remnants of its medieval complex survive and can be visited: the Sainte-Chapelle, a Gothic masterpiece built by Saint Louis between 1243 and 1248 to house relics such as the Crown of Thorns, with two superimposed chapels and exceptional stained-glass windows; and the Conciergerie, a state prison since 1370, where Queen Marie Antoinette was held in 1793. Both monuments have separate entrances and offer visitors a journey through the history of royal and judicial power in France.
