Prado Museum

The Museo Nacional del Prado, on Madrid's Paseo del Prado, is one of the most important art museums in the world. Its collection, largely drawn from the Spanish Royal Collection, spans European painting from the 12th century to the early 20th, with particular emphasis on the Spanish, Flemish and Italian schools. It holds masterpieces such as Velázquez's 'Las Meninas', Bosch's 'The Garden of Earthly Delights', Goya's 'The Third of May 1808 in Madrid', El Greco's 'The Nobleman with His Hand on His Chest', Rubens's 'The Three Graces' and Rogier van der Weyden's 'The Descent from the Cross'. The main building, designed by Juan de Villanueva, opened to the public in 1819. The museum holds more than 8,600 paintings, 700 sculptures and thousands of drawings and prints, and displays more than 1,865 works across 95 rooms. Visits are made with a timed entry slot, and general admission includes the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Admission is free during the last two hours of opening. The museum is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility and offers audio guides in several languages.
