Semper Opera House (Semperoper)
The Semperoper, on Theaterplatz, takes its name from the architect Gottfried Semper, who designed the first building, inaugurated on 13 April 1841. A fire destroyed it in 1869 and the second auditorium, in Neo-Renaissance style, was completed in 1878 by his son Manfred Semper from his father's plans, as the father was in exile because of his role in the May Uprising of 1849. In 1945 the bombing left only the outer shell. Reconstruction was completed on 13 February 1985, exactly forty years after the destruction, and the theatre reopened with Weber's Der Freischütz. Above the portal there is a quadriga with Dionysus and monuments to Goethe, Schiller, Shakespeare, Sophocles, Molière and Euripides. The auditorium has 1,300 seats and the Dresden Staatskapelle has premiered works by Wagner and Richard Strauss here.
