Church of Santiago

CultureVisit: ~30 min

The Church of Santiago gives its name to the Santiago neighbourhood, one of the flamenco quarters of Jerez, and stands in Plaza de Santiago, outside the old city wall. It originated in two hermitages built after Alfonso X conquered the city in 1264. The present church was built between the late 15th century and the first half of the 16th under the direction of Alonso Rodríguez. It is a Gothic hall church with three aisles of different heights and rib vaults, and it has three Gothic doorways; the main one bears the coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs. The Baroque tower dates from 1663, the bell gable from 1760, and the Mannerist-style sacristy was finished in 1603. It was declared a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1931. Inside is venerated the Cristo del Prendimiento, known in the neighbourhood as 'Prendi', which is carried in procession on the night of Holy Wednesday.
